When a ship is no longer in service, most of its materials can be recycled. Approximately 750 commercial ships are scrapped each year.
This process takes place predominantly in Asia, where focus on environmental and occupational health and safety is often not as high on the agenda as in Europe.
Recycling ships without consideration for the environment and working conditions is unacceptable. Danish Shipping supports clear and ambitious rules for recycling ships.
Danish Shipping supports the ratification of the Hong Kong Convention as recycling of ships should be subject to international regulation.

Plastic
Plastic does not belong in the ocean. And although only a small portion of plastic pollution in the ocean originates from ships, Danish Shipping has a clear stance and supports initiatives aimed at preventing pollution.
Shore Power
Shore power for ships in port provides electricity to replace the power generated by the ship's auxiliary engine. Danish Shipping supports the establishment of shore power where a high proportion of renewable energy is available as a means to reduce local air pollution from shipping.
