Plastic

Plastic does not belong in the ocean. And although only a small portion of plastic pollution in the ocean originates from ships, Danish Shipping has a clear stance and supports initiatives aimed at preventing pollution.

Plastic does not belong in the ocean. Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to the marine environment and harms ecosystems, wildlife, and biodiversity.

Danish Shipping works to prevent marine plastic pollution and supports initiatives that reduce waste at sea and promote the responsible management of waste from ships.

Among other measures, Danish Shipping supports the EU's Port Reception Facilities Directive, which makes it easier for ships to deliver waste ashore and thereby helps prevent waste from ending up in the sea.

At the same time, we advocate global solutions. Danish Shipping supports the development of binding international rules within the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to prevent plastic pollution from shipping and ensure consistent requirements across borders. This includes supporting the development of global rules for the safe transport of plastic pellets, reducing the risk of releases into the marine environment, and ensuring a level playing field for the shipping industry.

Prevention, responsible management, and international regulation are essential to protecting the marine environment and reducing plastic pollution worldwide.
