Denmark once again among the world’s best-performing flag states

Denmark is once again ranked at the very top of the International Chamber of Shipping’s (ICS) newly published Flag State Performance Table. Denmark is one of only ten countries to achieve a positive score across all assessed criteria.

Denmark is one of just ten flag states with “green” indicators for every criterion used in the assessment, which is published annually by ICS, an international trade association for shipowners and operators. The table shows the extent to which flag states comply with international maritime conventions, rules and regulations.

“A Danish flag at the stern is a mark of quality. The latest assessment from the International Chamber of Shipping underlines this very clearly. It is of great value that potential customers can rely on Danish shipping companies to deliver products and services of the highest quality. Danish Shipping has just launched a new strategy with a strong focus on strengthening Denmark as the preferred community for shipping companies. The fact that we year after year rank at the very top of the list of best-performing flag states only helps to make Denmark even more attractive as a flag state and a potential home for shipping companies,” said Anne H. Steffensen, CEO of Danish Shipping.

The other nations, in addition to Denmark, with green indicators across the board are France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, Malta, Norway, Singapore and the United Kingdom.*

The criteria used to compile ICS’s Flag State Performance Table include ratification of relevant international conventions, port state control, white- and blacklists, low average fleet age, audits of IMO member states, and much more.

* Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the Isle of Man, which fall under the United Kingdom, also have perfect scores.
